Gaia Midwives have hospital privileges at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) in East Meadow, New York. We are proud to bring our patients to this facility for a number of reasons:
*** The obstetric department at NUMC supports the midwifery model of care ***
Midwifery patients in labor at NUMC can eat, drink, walk about, and be intermittently monitored. They can use a birthing pool, if so desired to cope with labor. These may seem like simple things, and, in a way, they are... but they are critical to normal birth! By allowing this physiologic approach to labor, women can tune in to what their bodies need and ALLOW the powerful birthing energies to flow, while keeping the non-productive stress hormones to a minimum.
We midwives believe all this, and are supported in this approach to labor by the doctors and nurses at NUMC. They, too, have seen not only the good research literature that supports this approach, but have also seen the safety and satisfaction that is possible when we allow normal birth to happen.
*** The obstetric department at NUMC has a track record of safety***
The statistics compiled by the NY State Dept. of Health attest to the highest performance ratings:
NUMC has
* the lowest cesarean section rate on Long Island
* the highest vaginal birth after cesarean rate (VBAC) rate on Long Island
* the lowest pre-term birth rate
* the lowest episiotomy and laceration rate

*** Gaia patients return for repeat deliveries at NUMC ***
Gaia midwives have been delivering at NUMC for the last ten years, and some of our families have had their second, third, and even fourth babies with us! That kind of satisfaction speaks to an experience where special efforts are made to accommodate each families' needs. In addition to a private room, where partners can stay overnight with mom, NUMC offers rooming in, where your baby is with you all the time. When all is well with you & baby, we can arrange for "early discharge", going home within 24-26 hours after delivery.
