Water Birth
The use of water during labor and birth has been proven effective as a non-pharmocological pain reliever. It not only enhances a womans comfort during active labor, but increases her mobility as well.
At Nassau University Medical Center (pictured below), there is a state of the art underwater birthing room. Separate from the standard noise and routine of the labor floor, this peaceful oasis has allowed many women the opportunity to enjoy unmedicated birth.
Protocols for Water Birth at NUMC include
Active Labor (5cm or greater)
Good Fetal Heart Rate and Reactivity
Membranes (if ruptured) - Clear
No VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Ceserean)
Labor is a family affair. Water provides comfort, privacy and moments of bonding rarely afforded in traditional settings.
First moments are important. Waterbirth affords the newborn a chance to observe and be observed - peacefully.
